Omaha Eight or Better Poker Games

Article by John Finney

Omaha Eight or Better is also known in the poker world as Omaha Hi/Lo. There are two types of Omaha Eight or Better currently available to poker players.

In Limit Omaha Eight or Better there is a predetermined betting limit in each game and betting round. In Pot Limit Omaha Eight or Better, players can bet the amount of the entire pot.

In Omaha Eight or Better Poker, the dealer is indicated by a dealer button. As hands are finished, the button is passed clockwise to the next player, who will be the dealer for the next hand.

The deck of cards will be shuffled before the start of each hand. In online games, the system will use a series of random numbers when shuffling the deck, which will ensure fairness to each player.

The player that sits clockwise next to the dealer is the one who is required to place the small blind. The amount of the small blind is always equal to half of the lower stake amount. The small blind is usually estimated and rounded down to the nearest dollar. The amount of the small blind can vary from game to game, depending on how the game is setup at the beginning.

The player sitting to the left of the player that posts the small blind will post the big blind, which is usually equal to the lower stake limit. Occasionally, more than one player will be allowed to post the big blind in a hand, usually when a new player joins a table with a game in progress. The new player would have the option to place a big blind when the next hand begins, or wait for his turn to place the big blind. All blinds in this game are live bets, and the players that post them are able to check, call, raise, or fold when the betting comes back around the table to them.

Once the blinds are places, the dealer will deal the hole cards to every player. These four cards are dealt to each player, then the first betting round commences. Betting for this round will begin with the player to the left of the player who posted the big blind. The first round is set at the lower limit of the stakes structure. During this round, each player can choose to place bets. All the participating players will also have the option of folding. Each player is required to place bets in equal amount as the previous players. During the betting round, there are limits to the number or amount of the bets that players can place.

When the first round of betting is over, the flop (first three community cards) will be dealt. Community cards are cards that are available to all players in the hand.

When the flop is over, and in each betting round afterwards, play begins with the player left of the dealer. During the second round, bets are also limited to the lower limit of the stake structure for bets and raises. The first player of the round is the only one that has the option to bet, the remaining players choose between call and raise. The dealer then deals the fourth community card, also known as the turn.
